As their current coast-to-coast co-headline tour with Dethklok, High On fire and Converge draws to a close as it approaches the West Coast this week, a brand new, limited version of their current album Crack The Skye will become available online only. The last limited Edition item sold out well in advance of the on-sale date. To accommodate the demand from fans for more, the band wanted to create another exclusive item for those who may have been left out. Thus, the Royal Edition of Crack The Skye will contain the album in its entirety along with the complete version of the album score.

Mastodon have set a December 15, 2009 release date for the new limited 'Crack The Skye' royal edition featuring the official score.
This ultra special edition will come housed in gold foil embossed Digi-book package with all new gold and black logo artwork designed by Paul Romano. The package will also contain an exclusively designed 6'x 6' artwork lithograph available in this package only plus a bonus instantly available downloadable versions of 'Divinations,' and 'Colony Of Birchen,' (both Live from XFM UK).
Pre-orders of the royal edition are available right now through only and will begin shipping on December 15, 2009. The cost is $38.98, and this will be available one time only; once they are gone, they will not be created again, so don't delay. Mastodon’s stature in American metal is unmatched; only Isis even plays the same game. Both bands trade in tectonic riffs that recall thrash and sludge pioneers of the late-‘80s metal underground, but they’re equally as attentive to the melodic dimensions of their sound. Both bands also match their proggy fretwork with similarly mind-bending lyrical themes, and in the last decade, the two great practitioners of experimental metal have worked on similar trajectories: an auspicious breakthrough in 2002 (Mastodon’s Remission and Isis’s Oceanic), a highly conceptual follow-up (the Melvillean metal of Leviathan, the postmodern paranoia of Panopticon), and a 2006 release that pushed the group’s sonics to even stranger frontiers ( Blood Mountain and In the Absence of Truth). Laid out as such, the argument for Mastodon’s superiority makes itself: Isis’s Oceanic was more fully realized than Remission, but Leviathan and Blood Mountain far surpass their counterparts in compositional dexterity and uncompromising force. Whereas Isis has been content to refine their Neurosis-by-way-of-Slint post-metal, Mastodon seems committed to never make the same album twice. Every time out, their sphere of influences expands and their progressive tendencies develop in new directions. Crack the Skye makes it clear that those first three releases, landmarks that they were, did not exhaust Mastodon’s creative energies.
